The Town of Rutherfordton is motivating students to recycle by introducing a new and engaging “Recycling Challenge” campaign. The goal of the campaign is to challenge students to not only recycle their trash, but to find creative ways to reuse it.
Elementary and middle school-aged children are receiving “Recycling Challenge” program flyers the week of October 24. The elementary program encourages students to join the “Team Recycle” super hero squad and collect as many recyclable materials as possible until his or her task sheet is completed.
Middle school students are challenged to find ways to reuse trash by re-purposing it into a decorative or functional project. High school students are tasked with designing a recycling themed mural and the winning artwork will be featured downtown. “Recycling Challenge” project entries must be submitted by November 30 in order to be eligible for a prize.
The “Recycling Challenge” also includes Facebook contests and prizes. Elementary students can enter by having a parent post a picture of him or her recycling while wearing a super hero costume. Middle school students can post pictures of their reuse project using the hashtag #teamrecycle. Photos should be posted to the Town of Rutherfordton’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/MyRutherfordton. The best photo in each group will win a special prize. Winners will be announced before Christmas break and featured on MyRutherfordton.com.

“We recently completed a project with the Rutherford County Visual Artists Guild where the artists painted recycling themed art on our town recycling bins,” said Rutherfordton Town Manager Doug Barrick. “It was a huge success and brought a lot of visibility to our recycling program. We thought these contests would be a great way to reach students and not only involve them in recycling, but also in spreading awareness both at school and at home. Our hope is that they will learn from this activity, be excited about recycling, and continue to encourage others to recycle.”
