The Legend of Amos Owens

Amos Owens, a name synonymous with cherry bounce, was a master distiller whose craft gained notoriety during the 1920s. His secret recipe, which blended locally grown cherries with high-proof whiskey, became a sought-after elixir, attracting both locals and those looking to indulge in the forbidden pleasures of the time. Owens’ resilience and ingenuity in the face of Prohibition’s restrictions allowed him to thrive as he navigated the shadowy world of underground distilling.

The Cherry Bounce Trail pays tribute to Owens’ legacy, inviting visitors to trace the steps of this storied moonshiner through Golden Valley in Rutherford County where he made his home. It is easy to understand why people journeyed to attend his annual cherry-picking party and why so many still flock to the area today, especially in the fall.

The Trail Experience

The Cherry Bounce Trail is more than just a route; it’s an immersive experience that combines stunning nature, historical landmarks, and engaging stories of the past. The trail winds through picturesque landscapes, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills, dense forests, and historic landmarks such as Washburn's Store, the oldest continually-run, family-owned & -operated retail business in all of North Carolina!

Key Highlights Along the Trail:

  1. Defiant Whiskey: The distilling history of the region is still alive today and you can view the modern adaptations made to produce Defiant Whiskey. Defiant practices a new way of distilling. They aren't bound by traditional barrels or recipes but instead, take their cues from the nature that surrounds Golden Valley. Inspired, perhaps, by what Amos Owens knew over 100 years ago. They use only four ingredients, the main one being pure water from the Blue Ridge Mountains drawn from a limestone cavern aquifer on which the distillery is built. That's an ingredient you can only find in this region. Take a tour of the distillery and taste it for yourself.

  2. Historic Landmarks: Along the trail, you’ll find a number of historic landmarks such as antebellum homes, an old gold mine, and North Carolina's oldest-run family retail business.

    1. Washburn's Store has the honor of being recognized as the oldest continually-run, family-owned and operated retail business in all of North Carolina. Established in 1831, Washburn’s General Store has been handed down through five generations and is now run by Ann Washburn Hutchins, its first proud woman owner. As you step Inside you will find yourself transported back in time. Browse a selection of handmade jellies, jams and soups, old-fashioned cookware and plates and other vintage brands and candy. It is an experience not to be missed.

    2. In downtown Rutherfordton, The Bechtler House walks you through the history of the NC Gold Rush. Occurring almost fifty years before the California Gold Rush, the NC Gold Rush is less known, but was integral in developing many of the tools and techniques for gold mining in the US. Christopher Betchler minted the first dollar gold coin and at one time produced more currency than the US Mint. Explore his home or take the short-drive up to his mine site to learn more about this pivotal time in North Carolina History.

    3. The Historic Walking Trail through downtown Rutherfordton provides a variety of antebellum homes, historic churches and historic buildings. Access additional information on each site can be accessed through a QR code attached to a plaque at the site.

  3. Must-See Stops: Although not quite historic there are still a few stops you must make along this trail.

    1. The first is Smith's Drug and Fountain in Forest City. Featured in Our State Magazine for their housemade grilled pimento cheese, this old-timey soda fountain and ice cream shop is a unique experience that is worth a pitstop. While there you can check out the Arcade Museum next door.

    2. Traveling with kids? They will love Kidsense's Children's Museum in downtown Rutherfordton. With ever-changing interactive displays and exhibits, no trip to our area is complete without it.

Cultural Significance

The Cherry Bounce Trail is not just a tribute to moonshining; it also highlights the broader cultural significance of Prohibition in America. During the 1920s, moonshining became a symbol of resistance against government control and an assertion of local identity. The ingenuity of moonshiners like Amos Owens not only shaped the local economy but also fostered a sense of community among those who shared in the risks and rewards of distilling.

Today, the trail serves as a reminder of the complexities of history, where hardship bred creativity and a spirit of rebellion.

Rutherfordton was once the "Gateway to the West" with the first newspaper, the first county seat in the west and one of the first public schools all calling Rutherfordton home. This region is known for its entrepreneurial spirit which is still alive and thriving today which can be seen in the small, locally-owned businesses that pepper downtown Rutherfordton.
